Following the mass shootings in Christchurch on Friday (15/3/19) the following Press Statement has been issued by the Chair of HERI.
PRESS STATEMENT on behalf of Hull & East Riding Interfaith
On behalf of the Hull and East Riding Interfaith Committee I express our condolences to all in New Zealand directly impacted by the mass shootings.
I also express solidarity and support for all our Muslim brothers and sisters in Hull and East Riding whose sense of security may be affected by this horrid act of ignorant racist brutality.
I am reminded of the famous statement:
‘First they came for the communists, and I did not speak out—
Because I was not a communist.
Then they came for the trade unionists, and I did not speak out—
Because I was not a trade unionist.
Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out—
Because I was not a Jew.
Then they came for me—and there was no one left to speak for me’.
It is important that people of good faith call out racism in all its forms.
